Head lice terrorises many families throughout the kindergarten and schooling years. These wingless insects are so small, about the size of a pin head, that they can be hard to see. They also vary in colour from a whitish-brown to a redish-brown.

Always remember that head lice do not discriminate! They like to live in any type of hair whether it be long, short, dirty or clean.

Head Lice Management

• Try to ensure your child does not attend school with untreated head lice.

• If your child is affected by head lice notify the school and advise when you begun the head lice treatment.

• Do not treat hair with unsafe products that are not specifically for head lice treatment. Such as fly spray or insecticidal surface sprays.

• Regularly (preferably once a week) check your child’s hair for lice and eggs, particularly in children attending Childcare,   Kindergarten and Primary School. It is possible that because of the way that children play, head lice seem to occur more among younger children.

• You can also notify the parents/guardians of your child’s friends so they have an opportunity to detect and treat their children if necessary.

• A child with head lice can return to school, kindergarten or childcare after head lice treatment has commenced. Although head lice policies may vary in each facility and may require your child to stay home until the following day. Please confirm with your school or centre.

Helpful Hints

• An itchy scalp is not always a symptom of head lice but if your child is scratching it is recommended that you check the hair for an infestation.

• Tying hair back can help prevent the spread of head lice but is no guarantee that it will stop them

• Remember:  Once a week - Take a peek
